Cherie Hill | Current & Future Dance & Creative Projects
Dance Artist • Choreographer • Scholar • Educator • Culture Bearer
I am an interdisciplinary dance artist, choreographer, scholar, educator, and culture bearer whose work explores the intersections of Black culture, ecology, wellness, somatics, and joy. My creative practice includes dance performance, research, retreats, and community-based projects that invite people to reconnect with their bodies, culture, nature, and capacity to dream.
As a Black woman, mother, artist, and lifelong dancer, I am driven to create work that honors lived experience, nurtures community, and imagines more joyful and sustainable ways of being.
I am a recipient of the California Arts Council Individual Artist Fellowship for Established Artists, supporting my continued development as an artist, culture bearer, and shaper of culture in California. This post highlights my current and future dance and creative projects.

THE SPACE IN BETWEEN
A Multidisciplinary Dance Project Journey Across Waters, Lands, and Bodies
The Space In Between is an evolving multidisciplinary dance work exploring distance—how we experience it, carry it, and attempt to bridge it. The work considers the spaces between people, homelands, and our bodies and the natural world through movement, visual imagery, storytelling, and audience engagement.
The work has transformed through place and collaboration. It premiered in San Francisco in 2024, where it explored separation, displacement, and the embodied experience of distance. In Belize in 2025, the work expanded into questions of land, memory, Garifuna history, hurricanes, and climate change. In Dubuque in 2026, the Mississippi River became a central presence, connecting questions of environmental responsibility, colonization, care, and collective action.
Rather than being a fixed work, The Space In Between continues to evolve with each landscape, community, and collaboration.
Questions at the heart of the work include:
How do we bridge the spaces between us?How do we reconnect—with land, with water, and with each other?

DUB DANCE RESEARCH
Dance • Culture • History • International Research
My long-term research explores the origins, cultural development, movement practices, and globalization of dub dance.
As a dancer, choreographer, scholar, and educator, I am interested in how dance carries cultural knowledge and how movement practices travel across communities and borders. My research examines dub dance not simply as a movement form, but as a cultural practice shaped by music, history, place, identity, and exchange.
This research is currently developing toward a book exploring dub dance origins, culture, and globalization.
BLACK WOMEN DREAM PROJECT
Dance • Wellness • Ecology • Dreaming
The Black Women Dream Project explores dance, wellness, nature, dreaming, and collective imagination as tools for Black women's creative and personal transformation.
Through movement, reflection, art-making, and engagement with nature and place, the project creates space for Black women to consider their dreams, wellness, relationships, and possibilities for the future.
The project grows from my belief that dreaming is not simply an individual act. Dreaming can be a creative, embodied, cultural, and collective practice—one that helps us imagine different ways of living and being in relationship with ourselves, one another, and the world around us.
The project has also informed my broader research into the relationships between dance, wellness, ecology, Black women's experiences, and collective dreaming.

DANCE DREAM REJUVENATE
Dance • Rest • Wellness • Dreaming
Dance Dream Rejuvenate brings together dance, somatic movement, reflection, creative expression, wellness, dreaming, and rest.
I create these experiences to give women opportunities to reconnect with their bodies, cultivate joy, step away from everyday demands, and make room to imagine what is next.
My retreat work is rooted in a simple but powerful belief: we need space to rest in order to dream, and we need space to dream in order to create.
Through movement, nature, creativity, conversation, and community, Dance Dream Rejuvenate creates opportunities for participants to pause and reconnect with themselves.
As someone who holds space for others, I also understand the importance of creating space for the facilitator. My own need for rest, nature, reflection, and creative renewal is part of what drives this work.
FUTURE ARTISTIC INQUIRY
Creative Projects
My current artistic inquiry sits at the intersection of dance, ecology, Black culture, wellness, somatics, nature, and place.
I am interested in how nature can become a site for creative thinking, cultural memory, restoration, and imagining new possibilities. I am also interested in how dance can help us reconnect—with our bodies, our histories, our communities, and the environments that sustain us.
At this stage of my practice, I am developing several interconnected projects, including my Dance Dream Rejuvenate retreats, my long-term dub dance research and forthcoming book, and opportunities for international cultural exchange and artistic research.
I am especially interested in creating work that moves between research and practice, individual experience and collective experience, art and wellness, and movement and place.
WHY I CREATE
I believe dance can be a way of knowing.
It can help us listen to our bodies, remember our histories, connect with one another, experience joy, process change, and imagine something different.
My work is driven by curiosity, cultural connection, care, and a desire to create spaces where people can move, reflect, rest, dream, and experience possibility.
