Why Retreats Matter: Make Time to Rest, Move, Dream, and Rejuvenate

When was the last time you truly stepped away?

Not just from work, but from the responsibilities, expectations, routines, and constant doing that can fill our days? For many of us, stepping away can feel like something we have to earn. We tell ourselves we'll take a break when the work is finished, when the family needs us less, when the project is complete, when life settles down.

But life rarely settles down for long. There is always another email. Another responsibility. Another person who needs something. Another item on the list. And somewhere in all of that doing, it can become easy to lose touch with ourselves.

This is one reason retreats matter.

A Retreat Gives You Permission to Pause & Rest

A retreat is more than a vacation. A vacation can certainly provide rest and enjoyment, but a retreat creates an intentional opportunity to step away from your everyday environment and turn your attention inward. It gives you time and space to ask questions that can be difficult to hear when life is moving quickly:

How am I really doing? What do I need right now? What brings me joy? What am I ready to release? What do I want to make space for next?

You don't necessarily need to have answers when you arrive. Sometimes the value is simply having enough space to ask the questions.

We Are Always Evolving

One of the reasons I believe in retreats is that we are always evolving. Our lives change. Our relationships change. Our bodies change. Our careers change. Our interests change. Our dreams change. Yet we don't always give ourselves the opportunity to acknowledge those changes.

A retreat can create a pause between where you've been and where you're going.

It can be a place to reflect on the season you're in rather than rushing immediately into the next one. And that reflection doesn't have to be serious all the time.

Self-care and inner work can include laughter, music, movement, good food, nature, creativity, conversation, rest, joy. The work on ourselves can be through experiences that don't feel like "work" at all.

Dream: Retreating Is Not the Same as Escaping

I don't think of retreats as running away from your life. Instead, I think of them as creating enough distance from your normal routine to see your life differently. When we are immersed in our responsibilities, it can be difficult to recognize what we need. Stepping away—even temporarily—can create a different perspective.

You may return with a new idea. A renewed sense of energy. A clearer intention. A reminder of something you had forgotten. Or perhaps nothing dramatic happens at all. Maybe you simply spend a day breathing, moving, laughing, resting, and being present. Remembering that this rest matters, too.

Retreats Matter: What Makes a Retreat Meaningful?

A retreat doesn't have to be luxurious or elaborate to be meaningful. What matters is the intention behind the time away. Are you giving yourself an opportunity to slow down? Are you creating space to reflect? Are you nourishing yourself? Are you making room for creativity and joy? Are you connecting with people who support your growth? Are you allowing yourself to dream beyond your immediate responsibilities? These are some of the things that can transform simply "getting away" into a retreat.

Take Time: Local Retreats Can Be Just as Powerful

A local retreat can give you the experience of stepping outside your normal routine without requiring extensive travel, planning, or time away. You might spend a day moving your body, creating art, journaling, enjoying a meal, spending time outdoors, listening to music, or having meaningful conversations.

You can return home that same day with the feeling that you actually stepped away.

This is one of the ideas behind my Dance Dream Rejuvenate retreats.

I wanted to create spaces where people could experience the benefits of retreating through movement, creativity, wellness, reflection, dreaming, and community—without the experience needing to look like a traditional wellness retreat.

Sometimes the Journey Is Part of the Dreaming on Retreats

There is also something special about traveling somewhere completely different.

An international retreat can offer the opportunity to experience another landscape, culture, food, history, and rhythm of life while also creating space for personal reflection.

For me, this is particularly meaningful in Belize and the Caribbean. My relationship with the Caribbean has extended beyond travel. It has been part of my artistic research, movement practice, scholarship, and personal exploration for many years.

So when I think about an international Dance Dream Rejuvenate experience, I don't think of the location as simply a beautiful backdrop.

Place matters. Culture matters. Food matters. Community matters. Retreats matter.

Experiencing Belizean and Caribbean culture, spending time in nature, sharing meals, moving together, creating, exploring, and dreaming can all become part of the retreat experience. Travel can interrupt our usual patterns in a way that staying home sometimes cannot. It can remind us that there are different ways of moving through the world. And sometimes that change in environment helps us see ourselves differently, too.

You Don't Have to Wait Until You're Depleted to Make the Time for Retreats

Perhaps the biggest reason to take a retreat is this: You don't have to wait until you're exhausted to take care of yourself. We often treat rest as something that comes after everything else is finished. But everything else is rarely finished. There will always be something to do. Someone may always need you. There may always be another goal to accomplish. Taking a retreat is not about abandoning those responsibilities. It's about recognizing that you are part of the equation, too. So take the time to rest, dream, move, and rejuvenate.

You deserve time to breathe before you are completely depleted.

You deserve opportunities for joy that aren't tied to productivity.

You deserve time to dream without immediately turning the dream into a task.

You deserve to experience your body as a source of pleasure, expression, and connection—not only as something that gets you through your daily responsibilities.

And you deserve spaces where you don't have to be "on" all the time.

Why? Because that is why we are here and why holisitic health matters.

Make Space for What Is Next

A retreat doesn't have to change your entire life. Sometimes it simply gives you enough space to remember what is already there.

For me, Dance Dream Rejuvenate is one way of creating that kind of space. Through dance, wellness, creativity, nature, culture, rest, reflection, and community, these retreats are an invitation to pause and reconnect—with yourself, with others, and with the dreams that continue to evolve along with you.

Whether your retreat is an afternoon close to home or a journey across the Caribbean, the intention can be the same:

Step away.

Listen.

Move.

Rest.

Dream.

Rejuvenate.

And then return to your life with a little more space for yourself within it.

Because your dreams deserve space, too.
